ISLAMABAD – The appointment of DIG Abdul Ghafoor Afridi as the new head of Bannu Range has generated considerable interest within police circles, with many viewing his return as a potentially significant development for one of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s most challenging and sensitive police regions. Ghafoor Afridi is not an unfamiliar face in Bannu. He has previously served in the region and understands its security dynamics, local challenges and the operational realities faced by police officers on the ground. His earlier tenure in Bannu remains a point of discussion among police circles, particularly for his approach towards tackling criminal elements, drug dealers, proclaimed offenders and extortionists. His return comes at a time when Bannu Range needs strong, experienced and field-oriented leadership. The region presents a difficult mix of terrorism, organized crime, extortion, targeted attacks and security challenges, requiring a commander who can combine operational experience with effective coordination and firm decision-making. What makes Ghafoor’s appointment particularly interesting is that he is returning to an area he already knows rather than stepping into an unfamiliar command. That familiarity could prove valuable in understanding local networks, assessing security threats and strengthening the police response. His previous posting in Bannu also attracted attention when his transfer became a subject of public and political discussion. Despite the controversies surrounding that episode, his supporters at the time highlighted his actions against criminal networks and described him as an officer willing to take tough decisions. Now, the circumstances are different and the challenges are arguably greater. For Abdul Ghafoor Afridi, the new assignment is more than another posting. It is an opportunity to demonstrate whether his experience, command style and knowledge of the region can translate into measurable results. The message from his appointment appears clear: Bannu needs results, not rhetoric. Police personnel will be watching closely, while criminal elements and those involved in extortion and other unlawful activities will also be keenly observing how the new DIG sets the tone. If Ghafoor Afridi succeeds in combining intelligence-led operations, strong field supervision and high morale among the force, his return to Bannu could become one of the more consequential police appointments in the region. For now, one thing is certain: Abdul Ghafoor Afridi is back in Bannu, and the new command has already attracted attention. The real test begins on the ground.
