BISHKEK: Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for higher-quality development of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), urging member states to strengthen cooperation in development, security, people-to-people ties and global governance.
Addressing the 26th Meeting of the SCO Council of Heads of State in Bishkek on Tuesday, Xi said the organization had developed into a major regional cooperation platform over the past 25 years, guided by the “Shanghai Spirit” of mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality, consultation and common development.
He called for expanded cooperation in trade, investment, connectivity, energy, artificial intelligence, the digital economy and green industries. China, he said, would continue supporting SCO countries through technological cooperation, renewable energy projects and trade initiatives.
On security, Xi urged joint action against terrorism, separatism, extremism, transnational crime, drug trafficking and telecom fraud, while calling for stronger cooperation in information, biological and outer-space security.
He also emphasized people-centered cooperation, cultural exchanges and educational links among SCO countries, saying diversity of civilizations should be respected and friendship among peoples strengthened.
Calling for greater multilateralism, Xi said SCO members should resolve differences through dialogue and consultation and work toward more equitable global governance. He also supported efforts to promote political settlements on Ukraine, the Middle East, Afghanistan and other regional hotspots.
At the conclusion, Xi congratulated Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on assuming the chairmanship of the SCO Council of Heads of State and assured Pakistan of China’s strong support, saying Beijing would work with all member states to advance the organization’s development and contribute to a community with a shared future for humanity.
