ISLAMABAD : Australian High Commissioner to Pakistan, His Excellency Mr. Timothy Kane, hosted Sardar Waqar Shahzad, Advocate High Court, at the Australian Residence in Islamabad, where the two sides held a cordial and wide-ranging discussion on strengthening people-to-people, educational, cultural and economic ties between Pakistan and Australia.
The meeting focused on a range of areas of mutual interest, including educational and student exchange opportunities, business linkages, agriculture and livestock, tourism, and greater people-to-people engagement between Australians and Pakistanis.
Sardar Waqar Shahzad highlighted the potential for expanded cooperation that could create meaningful opportunities for students, entrepreneurs and local communities. He particularly emphasized the prospects for enhancing educational, business and tourism connections involving Swat and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The discussion also explored the intriguing historical connection represented by The Ghan, Australia’s renowned railway journey. Its name is historically linked to the pioneering cameleers from the Indian subcontinent, including communities from the region, whose contribution played an important role in transport, supply and the development of inland Australia.
Agriculture and livestock also featured prominently in the discussion. Sardar Waqar Shahzad noted the scope for Pakistan to benefit from Australia’s experience and expertise in livestock and cattle farming, while exploring opportunities for knowledge-sharing, technical cooperation and stronger sectoral linkages.
Mr. Jaeger Konidaris, First Secretary (Economic), also attended the meeting.
During the meeting, Sardar Waqar Shahzad expressed his appreciation to the Australian High Commissioner for the warm hospitality and extended a personal invitation to visit Swat Valley to experience its rich culture, heritage, hospitality and natural beauty.
As a gesture of friendship and cultural goodwill, Sardar Waqar Shahzad presented the High Commissioner with traditional gifts, including a Pakol woollen cap and a handcrafted wooden carving, reflecting the cultural heritage and traditional craftsmanship of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The meeting concluded on a warm and positive note, with both sides exchanging views on ways to promote stronger links between the peoples of Australia and Pakistan. The interaction underscored the potential for deeper cooperation in education, commerce, tourism, agriculture and cultural exchange, opening avenues for greater engagement between the two countries and communities in the years ahead.
