SHANGLA: The Balochistan government distributed financial assistance cheques of Rs500,000 each among the families of 34 miners who lost their lives in the Sorenj coal mine tragedy.
A condolence and relief ceremony was held in Alpuri, where officials from Balochistan, Workers Welfare Fund representatives, political and social figures and relatives of the deceased miners expressed solidarity with the bereaved families.
Secretary Workers Welfare Fund Zulfiqar Ahmed said mine workers were the backbone of the national economy and their safety was a fundamental responsibility of the state. He assured the families that the government would continue supporting them.
He also announced that the educational expenses of the children of the deceased miners would be borne by the Workers Welfare Fund, with efforts to provide them opportunities at reputable educational institutions.
Officials said legal proceedings had been initiated over the Sorenj tragedy and assured that those found responsible would face action according to law.
