BEIJING: Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, the country’s top trade negotiator, will lead a delegation to the United States for economic and trade talks ahead of a planned meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump.
He will visit the US from September 19 to 23 for consultations on “economic and trade issues of mutual concern,” China’s official Xinhua news agency reported, citing the Ministry of Commerce.
The talks will be guided by the “important consensus” reached by Xi and Trump, according to the ministry.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he would meet He during the visit. He also indicated that discussions could include Iran, whose economic ties with China have been a longstanding source of tension between Washington and Beijing.
Trade issues are expected to remain central to the talks between Xi and Trump. The two leaders are scheduled to meet at the White House on September 24 to discuss trade, technology and broader strategic issues.
The United States and China have maintained a tariff truce for nearly a year following months of trade tensions after Trump returned to the White House. Although the truce eased concerns over further escalation, the two sides have yet to reach a comprehensive long-term agreement, leaving several major disputes unresolved.
