Lahore: Pakistan defeated South Africa by 9 wickets in the second T20 International at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, leveling the three-match series 1–1. The victory came on the back of an impressive all-round performance, led by fast bowler Salman Irshad Mirza, who produced a devastating spell reminiscent of Pakistan’s legendary left-arm pacers.
After winning the toss, Pakistan elected to bowl first and dominated from the outset. The South African batting lineup collapsed for 110 runs in 19.2 overs, with Faheem Ashraf taking 4 wickets for 23 runs, Salman Irshad Mirza claiming 3 wickets for just 14 runs, Naseem Shah taking 2 wickets, and Abrar Ahmed adding one to his tally.
In reply, Pakistan chased down the modest target with ease. Saim Ayub starred with an unbeaten 71 runs, smashing six fours and five sixes, while Babar Azam remained not out on 11. Sahibzada Farhan contributed 28 runs before being dismissed.
A notable change in Pakistan’s lineup saw Salman Irshad Mirza replacing Shaheen Afridi, a move that paid off handsomely. The left-arm fast bowler showcased remarkable pace, control, and swing—drawing comparisons to Wasim Akram for his disciplined line and length.
Born on January 1, 1994, in Lahore, Salman Mirza was discovered through the Lahore Qalandars’ Player Development Programme and made his T20 debut on February 21, 2021, in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). Known for his fiery bowling, he was also part of Lahore Qalandars’ 2025 PSL squad, where he earned two Player of the Match awards.
After the match, Salman Mirza credited captain Salman Ali Agha for his calm and encouraging leadership, stating that the skipper never puts pressure on players, even in tense moments.
Pakistan’s playing XI included Salman Ali Agha (captain), Babar Azam, Saim Ayub, Sahibzada Farhan, Usman Khan, Faheem Ashraf, Muhammad Nawaz, Salman Mirza, Naseem Shah, and Abrar Ahmed.
With this commanding win, Pakistan not only leveled the series but also showcased the rise of a new fast-bowling star in Salman Irshad Mirza, whose performance is being hailed as one of the most exciting in recent memory.
