RAWALPINDI: Senior ophthalmologist Dr Tayyab Afghani of Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital has been honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Pakistan Oculoplastic Association during an international eye conference held in Lahore, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to specialised eye care and medical education.
Dr Afghani, who heads the Orbit and Oculoplastics Department at Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital, was praised for his pioneering role in developing advanced services for complex eye diseases. Speakers at the conference described his work as transformative for the field of oculoplastics in Pakistan.
Renowned for his expertise in ocular oncology, reconstructive surgery, and eye tumours, Dr Afghani played a pivotal role in establishing Pakistan’s first dedicated centre providing free treatment for eye cancer patients, addressing a critical gap in specialised care for low-income families. He has authored more than 60 research papers and presented over 70 scientific studies at international conferences across more than 20 countries.
His earlier distinctions include the Distinguished Services Award, the Prevention of Blindness Award from the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology, and two gold medals from the Ophthalmological Society of Pakistan.
Speaking to the media, Dr Afghani said the award was an honour not only for him but also for Al-Shifa Trust. He noted that the hospital has steadily expanded its clinical services in line with international standards through sustained investment in infrastructure and professional training. According to him, the Trust has invested hundreds of millions of rupees in advanced diagnostic and surgical equipment to manage complex orbital and oncology cases.
He also highlighted the institution’s strong focus on human resource development. Al-Shifa Trust is among the country’s largest ophthalmology training centres, with programmes accredited by the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP). The hospital offers FCPS Part-II training, along with diplomas and fellowships in sub-specialties including paediatric ophthalmology, retina, and glaucoma.
According to data from the CPSP and the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council, Pakistan continues to face a shortage of eye specialists, particularly in rural areas. Al-Shifa Trust remains committed to providing affordable, specialised eye care to patients from across the country, especially those requiring services not widely available in the public sector.
