Dengue Fever: A Serious Threat and Its Prevention

By: Shams-ul-Haq, Regional Information Officer, Mardan
Dengue fever is a dangerous disease spread by the bite of a specific type of mosquito known as Aedes aegypti. This mosquito usually breeds in clean, stagnant water and is most active during the early morning and evening hours. In recent days, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa—particularly Charsadda and nearby districts—has witnessed a sharp rise in dengue cases. This has not only caused public concern but has also triggered alarm at the government level.

Rising Cases and Government Action

So far, numerous positive cases have been reported across the province, with the majority emerging from Charsadda. Unfortunately, some deaths have also been reported, underscoring the severity of the outbreak.
Realizing the urgency of the situation, Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Ali Amin Gandapur, took immediate notice. Acting on his instructions, Health Advisor Ehtisham Khan directed the Health Department to initiate swift and effective measures to prevent the disease from turning into a widespread epidemic. In response, special units have been set up in affected districts to carry out mosquito control sprays, conduct public awareness campaigns, and provide prompt medical assistance.

District-Level Efforts in Charsadda

Since Charsadda is the most affected district, Deputy Commissioner Dr. Azmatullah Wazir has personally taken charge of the anti-dengue campaign. Commissioner of Peshawar Division, Riaz Khan Mehsud, also made an emergency visit to Charsadda, reviewed the affected union councils, and expressed satisfaction with the preventive measures being taken.
He emphasized that controlling this outbreak is not possible unless the public is fully educated about prevention methods and actively participates in the campaign.

Alert in Other Districts

Likewise, Commissioner of Mardan Division, Nisar Ahmad, has instructed the local administration and health departments in Mardan and Swabi to take immediate steps to curb the spread of dengue at the local level. Hospitals at the district level have been directed to set up dedicated wards for suspected dengue patients and to ensure immediate testing and treatment facilities.

Precautionary Measures

To protect yourself and others from dengue, it is essential to:

Prevent water from accumulating in and around your home

Use mosquito nets while sleeping

Wear full-sleeved clothing

Apply mosquito repellent sprays and lotions

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience fever, body aches, or red spots on the skin

Dengue is a serious disease, but with a little caution, timely treatment, and public awareness, it can be controlled. The efforts made by the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are commendable, but real success depends on every individual understanding their responsibility and playing an active role in this campaign.
