Engineer Amir Muqam Pays Tribute on 20th Anniversary of 2005 Earthquake

Islamabad: Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs, Gilgit-Baltistan, and SAFRON, Engineer Amir Muqam, paid tribute to the victims of the devastating October 8, 2005 earthquake, marking its 20th anniversary. He lauded the courage, unity, and resilience of the Pakistani nation in the face of one of the country’s worst natural disasters.

Engineer Amir Muqam stated, “The earthquake that struck twenty years ago today was a tragic chapter in our history, claiming thousands of lives and displacing millions. Yet, the solidarity, patience, and perseverance the nation showed after this tragedy remain a shining example in our national history.”

Recalling his personal involvement in relief efforts, the Minister shared that he visited affected areas including Muzaffarabad, Balakot, and Bagh, where he worked alongside relief teams to assist victims. “I met the injured, comforted families, and ensured that aid reached those in need,” he said, highlighting the collective spirit shown by the armed forces, volunteers, civil society, and international partners.

On this solemn occasion, Engineer Muqam honored the martyrs and expressed solidarity with their families, urging the nation to continue strengthening its disaster preparedness. “We must not only remember the past but also equip ourselves to handle future natural disasters,” he emphasized.

The Minister added that the government is enhancing the national disaster management system, introducing new projects to train the public and improve rapid response mechanisms.

“This day reminds us that no matter how great the challenge, unity enables us to overcome it,” he concluded, appealing to citizens to cooperate with the government in adopting safety measures and preparedness plans to better face future emergencies.
