Hindu Kush Winter Sports Festival Begins Today in Upper Chitral

PESHAWAR: All preparations have been finalized for the Hindu Kush Winter Sports Festival 2026, which will be held under the auspices of the Directorate General of Sports Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at the foothills of the snow-capped mountains of Chitral Valley. The two-day festival will take place on January 7 and 8, 2026, in the scenic area of Harchan, Laspur, Upper Chitral.

These views were expressed by Director General Sports Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Tashfeen Haider while talking to the media. Director Operations Jamshed Baloch and Assistant Director Accounts Shah Faisal were also present on the occasion.

The DG Sports said that on the special instructions of Advisor to Sports and Youth Affairs Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Taj Muhammad Khan Tarand, the Sports Department is organizing this festival in collaboration with the District Administration Upper Chitral. The objective of the event is to promote winter tourism and showcase local culture at national and international levels.

He said that the opening ceremony will be attended by Advisor to Sports Taj Muhammad Khan Tarand, Secretary Sports, Deputy Commissioner Chitral Muhammad Imran, District Sports Officer Upper Chitral Miss Shahnaz, DSO Lower Chitral Khalid Khan, and other prominent personalities.

The festival will feature a variety of snow-based sports competitions, including ice hockey, skiing, snowboarding, and other traditional local winter sports. Cultural activities such as traditional dances and folk music performances of Chitral have also been arranged to add color and warmth to the winter event.

In addition, stalls showcasing Chitrali patti, embroidered garments, local handicrafts, and traditional foods will be set up for visitors.

According to the organizers, the main aim of the festival is to highlight the tourism potential of Upper Chitral. Despite the harsh winter conditions, a large number of tourists are expected to attend, for which special arrangements regarding road maintenance and security have been made. Local elders have welcomed the initiative, terming it a positive step for the promotion of the region’s economy and culture.
