PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Labour Faisal Khan Tarkai visited the Employees Social Security Institution (ESSI) Head Office in Peshawar today, where he inspected various departments and reviewed facilities being provided to workers and their families. The Minister visited the Polyclinic Hospital’s OPD, laboratory, and other medical sections, assessing the quality of services in detail.
Following the visit, the Minister chaired a high-level meeting attended by Secretary Labour / ESSI Commissioner Mian Adil Iqbal, Vice Commissioner Waseem Ahmad Khan, Director Medical, and other senior officers. The ESSI Secretary briefed the Minister on the institution’s establishment, structure, operations, revenue, and healthcare facilities.
The Minister was informed that ESSI, established in 1970, now operates under the ESSI Act 2021 on a self-sustained basis. The institution’s primary revenue comes from a 6% contribution from employees’ wages in registered organizations. Through one hospital, a polyclinic, and 39 medical units, ESSI provides free treatment and medicines to workers and their families.
The briefing also highlighted welfare provisions, including:
•75% to 100% salary in case of illness
•Full salary for 12 weeks during maternity
•180-day stipend in case of workplace injury
•Pension or gratuity in case of disability or death
ESSI has recently introduced LMIS and HMIS to enhance digital governance, and has issued over 126,000 e-cards to workers. Other achievements include establishing an M&CC unit in Peshawar, building a 24-bed hospital in D.I. Khan, and installing solar systems in various medical centers.
On the occasion, Minister Faisal Khan Tarkai distributed laptops among doctors for the implementation of the Hospital Information Management System (HIMS). He stated that digital systems will strengthen financial transparency, improve record-keeping, and ensure timely service delivery.
Minister Tarkai reaffirmed that merit, transparency, and public service remain the government’s top priorities. He emphasized expanding solar energy usage to reduce costs and pledged to resolve institutional challenges on a priority basis to ensure the best facilities for workers.
