KP Health Minister lays foundation stone for maternal & newborn care unit

PESHAWAR: ​Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Health Minister, Khaliq-ur-Rehman, visited the Rural Health Center (RHC) Patwar Bala on Warsak Road, Peshawar, on Monday. He was accompanied by Director General Health Dr. Shaheen Afridi and other relevant officials.
​During the visit, the Provincial Health Minister participated in the groundbreaking ceremony for the Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (BEmONC) unit and a new block. This unit is designed to provide life-saving medical facilities to manage complications during pregnancy, childbirth, and postnatal care.
​The expansion and construction project at RHC Patwar Bala is being completed with the collaboration of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Human Capital Investment Project (HCIP). Project Director HCIP, Dr. Bilal, and former Member of Provincial Assembly, Mahmood Jan, were also present. The expansion will provide additional space for new blocks and various health units, enabling the provision of better medical facilities to the local population. The Minister was given a detailed briefing on the project’s scope and its expected impact on strengthening primary health services in the area.
​During his visit, the Minister inspected various departments of the health center, including the laboratory, X-ray room, and minor operation theater, where doctors and paramedical staff were performing their duties.
​Key Directives and Statements:
​Medicine Availability: The Minister directed the Medical Superintendent to ensure the uninterrupted supply of medicines for patients.
​Zero Tolerance for Negligence: He emphasized that no negligence would be tolerated in providing medical facilities at the primary healthcare level.
​Staffing: He noted that the Health Department has been instructed to fast-track the recruitment of new doctors and paramedics to ensure required manpower at all basic health centers.
​Infrastructure: Steps are being taken to provide essential medical equipment to these centers.
​Reiterating the government’s commitment, Khaliq-ur-Rehman stated that the Health Department is focused on implementing major reforms to improve the grassroots health system. These reforms aim to provide timely treatment to poor patients at the district level, significantly reducing the burden on major tertiary hospitals.
​He added that the provincial government is also working on establishing new large-scale hospitals to alleviate the pressure on existing government hospitals in Peshawar. The Health Minister expressed hope that the upcoming Health Policy would bring sustainable improvements and that the public would soon witness positive changes in the healthcare system.
