Rabat: The Republic of Malawi has reiterated its constant and unwavering position in favor of Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its entire territory, including the Sahara region.
This stance was reaffirmed by Malawi’s newly appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. George Thapatula Chaponda, during a telephone conversation with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr. Nasser Bourita.
Dr. Chaponda expressed Malawi’s appreciation for “the growing international consensus” around the autonomy plan proposed by the Kingdom of Morocco, describing it as “the only credible and realistic solution” to the regional dispute. He also commended the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and reaffirmed Malawi’s support for the United Nations-led process as the exclusive framework for achieving a peaceful and lasting settlement.
Both ministers welcomed the positive momentum in bilateral relations since 2017, marked by strong cooperation in key areas such as agriculture, fisheries, mining, trade, and public finance. They also highlighted the operationalization of the Consulate General of Malawi in Laayoune in December 2023 as a clear demonstration of Malawi’s commitment to strengthening ties.
The two sides reaffirmed their determination to deepen multisectoral cooperation and align bilateral relations with the aspirations of both Heads of State—His Majesty King Mohammed VI and President Arthur Peter Mutharika.
At the conclusion of their discussion, the ministers expressed satisfaction with the quality of relations between the two countries and announced the upcoming signing of a new Roadmap of Cooperation, aimed at enhancing mutual coordination and support in regional and international forums, while further promoting the positive momentum of the Morocco–Malawi partnership.
