Among these stands TDF Ghar, a beautifully preserved architectural home that captures the soul of old Karachi. Located in the heart of the city, this house takes visitors back in time the moment they step inside.
TDF Ghar was constructed between the 1920 to 1930s. It was owned by a Hindu woman before the partition of the subcontinent. In 2016, The Dawood Foundation restored and renovated the building, transforming it into a heritage site open to tourists and history enthusiasts. The restoration preserved its original essence while making it accessible to the public. The house exudes nostalgia with its wide balconies, arched windows and handcrafted titles. Its leafy surroundings and quiet atmosphere create a peaceful sanctuary. The rooftop is one of its most admired features, offering a breathtaking view of Mazar-e-Quaid, the mausoleum of Pakistan’s founder. Standing there, visitors feel connected to the city’s glorious past.
Inside, the living room draws immediate attention. It is adorned with vintage furniture and antique items carefully preserved over the years. Classic objects such as an old payphone, a Philips cassette recorder, a chess set, backgammon board, and an Anglo-Indian vanity dressing table remind visitors of a simpler time. These relics especially captivate the younger generation, who come to experience life before smartphones and technology. TDF Ghar also includes a small but peaceful library. Students often sit here to study, surrounded by silence and the soft rustle of turning pages. The calm environment makes it a favourite spot for readers and researchers who want to escape the noise of city life.
Another highlight of this heritage home is the Sehan Cafe. Designed to resemble traditional Irani cafes of old Karachi, it features bentwood chairs, shaded trees, and a relaxed atmosphere. The cafe offers visitors a chance to enjoy tea while soaking in the historic charm of the surroundings. The architecture of TDF Ghar reflects the elegance of Karachi’s past. Every window, staircase and corridor carries the imprint of a bygone era. Walking through the house feels like stepping into a living memory of the city’s rich cultural history.
