Geneva: Federal Minister for SAFRON, Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan, Engineer Amir Muqam, met with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Mr. Filippo Grandi, as part of a high-level delegation meeting.
During the meeting, the Federal Minister appreciated the continued humanitarian assistance of UNHCR to refugees in Pakistan, particularly Afghan refugees, noting that Pakistan has generously hosted millions of refugees for over 46 years.
He emphasized that refugees in Pakistan enjoy access to the same essential facilities as Pakistani citizens, including healthcare, education, banking, water and sanitation, and employment opportunities.
Engineer Amir Muqam expressed gratitude to the UNHCR and the international community for their sustained support but also voiced concern over the decline in international assistance in recent years. He called for stronger global cooperation and concrete steps toward achieving a durable and sustainable solution to the refugee situation.
“We are grateful for the international community’s support, especially UNHCR’s efforts, and appeal to them to continue assisting refugees in Pakistan,” he said.
The Federal Minister reaffirmed that the Government of Pakistan remains fully committed to supporting all initiatives and efforts aimed at finding a viable, dignified, and lasting solution to the long-standing refugee issue.
