PESHAWAR: Under the auspices of the Khyber Union of Journalists and in collaboration with Peshawar General Hospital, a one-day cardiology medical camp was organized for journalists, offering free check-ups and screenings for heart-related diseases. The purpose of the camp was to provide timely diagnosis and awareness regarding the increasing heart-related health issues among the journalistic community.
The medical camp was attended by senior cardiologists, including Professor Dr. Javed Malik, CEO of Peshawar General Hospital, and Dr. Momin Khan Afridi, MD and Senior Cardiologist at Peshawar General Hospital, along with other expert doctors. They conducted detailed examinations of journalists and their family members. During the camp, facilities for blood pressure, blood sugar, ECG, and other screening tests were provided.
The one-day medical camp held at Peshawar Press Club saw over 150 journalists undergo ECG tests, more than 200 journalists and their family members receive blood sugar tests, and over 250 journalists benefit from clinical examinations. Blood sugar, blood pressure, and other basic tests were provided completely free of charge. Journalists diagnosed with heart conditions were given expert advice along with free medications.
During the examinations, doctors informed the media that journalists are increasingly at risk of heart diseases due to long working hours, irregular schedules, mental stress, and unbalanced lifestyles. They emphasized that journalists are the voice of society, and protecting their health is a shared responsibility. Such medical camps help raise awareness among journalists about heart-related health issues.
In his address at the closing ceremony, Professor Dr. Javed Iqbal Malik, Chief Executive of Peshawar General Hospital and heart specialist, stated that approximately 1.5 million people in Pakistan suffer from various heart diseases annually. Timely diagnosis can prevent severe complications. He added that journalists, due to heavy workloads and exposure to stressful situations, often face health challenges, including mental stress and high blood pressure, increasing the risk of heart diseases. He further highlighted that smoking and consumption of fatty foods contribute significantly to heart problems, and regular exercise can prevent cardiovascular diseases.
Professor Malik emphasized that the doors of Peshawar General Hospital are always open for journalists, and he hoped that the journalistic community would continue to support and acknowledge the hospital’s efforts in delivering quality healthcare.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, Khyber Union of Journalists President Kashif Uddin Syed and president Peshawar Press Club M. Riaz expressed their gratitude to the management of Peshawar General Hospital and the entire medical team, acknowledging their key role in providing top-notch facilities to journalists. They announced that Peshawar General Hospital would continue organizing health screening camps in various specialties to ensure the well-being of the journalistic community.
