A ceremony to formally hand over charge to the newly elected body of the Peshawar Press Club was held the other day. The event began with the recitation of the Holy Quran. A large number of members, including the newly elected cabinet, governing body members, senior journalists, former office-bearers and distinguished members, attended the ceremony.
On the occasion, Press Club President M. Riaz congratulated the newly elected leadership and thanked the esteemed members. He said that the new leadership of the Press Club would give top priority to safeguarding members’ rights, their welfare, and the resolution of their professional issues. He added that the leadership was fully aware of the economic and professional challenges faced by the members and, therefore, practical steps had been initiated without any delay.
President M. Riaz informed the gathering that a cheque of Rs 2 million had been received from Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Muhammad Sohail Afridi for a sports event. He further stated that efforts would be made to secure maximum funds in the form of a special grant from the Chief Minister on the occasion of the oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected body. Other priorities include obtaining original allotment letters for the Press Club’s respected members in the media enclave, construction of a new Press Club building equipped with modern facilities, enhancement of the seed money of the Journalists’ Welfare Endowment Fund, and ensuring the provision of previously announced solar systems as well as educational scholarships for the children of Press Club members.
Earlier, former General Secretary of the Peshawar Press Club, Tayyab Usman, formally handed over the club’s inventory record to the newly elected General Secretary, Alamgir Khan. Speaking on the occasion, General Secretary Alamgir Khan said that after the elections held on December 27, the newly elected body had assumed its responsibilities from January 1. He added that the process of forming committees would be completed in the first meeting of the governing body.
He further said that today’s ceremony was a continuation of the Peshawar Press Club’s proud tradition. Carrying forward such traditions after the democratic process of elections reflects the institution’s transparency, continuity and organizational strength, and these very traditions make the Peshawar Press Club a strong, united and dignified institution.
