- Meeting in Islamabad highlights collaboration on glacier research and potential Swedish-backed climate finance initiatives
ISLAMABAD: Ms. Alexandra Berg von Linde, Ambassador of Sweden to Pakistan, called on Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Musadik Malik in Islamabad on Tuesday to discuss climate cooperation and emerging global environmental challenges.
During the meeting, both sides exchanged views on the evolving global climate situation and its potential implications, emphasizing the need for stronger international collaboration.
The ambassador congratulated Dr. Malik on his invitation to participate in the Arctic Circle Assembly, noting that the invitation reflects growing global recognition that climate challenges transcend national boundaries and require collective international responses.
Dr. Malik highlighted the importance of cooperation among countries directly affected by glacial melt, including those in the Arctic region and nations within the Himalayan range. He said stronger partnerships between these regions could enhance research and help develop coordinated policy responses to address the increasing risks posed by glacier melt and climate change.

Ambassador von Linde also outlined Sweden’s approach to climate action, stressing that the country promotes climate engagement not only through development initiatives but also via active participation of the private sector.
In this context, she informed the minister that Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken (SEB), a Swedish financial institution involved in green lending, is exploring the establishment of a multi-country investment fund in Pakistan focused on water, infrastructure and energy projects.
The proposed initiative aims to support local companies by reducing risks associated with climate-related investments while advancing sustainable development. The fund is expected to work in coordination with the Green Climate Fund to mobilize climate finance.
The ambassador also sought the ministry’s support in its capacity as Pakistan’s National Designated Authority for the Green Climate Fund.
Dr. Malik welcomed the proposal and expressed interest in exploring the initiative further. He suggested holding a detailed meeting between representatives of SEB and the ministry next week to discuss the plan and identify potential areas for cooperation.
The minister noted that Pakistan offers significant opportunities for climate-focused investments, particularly in the water, infrastructure and energy sectors.
