PESHAWAR: The University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Peshawar and Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU) Islamabad have agreed to collaborate on research and development in the field of critical minerals and Rare Earth Elements (REEs).
In a meeting between Prof. Dr. Sadiq Khattak, Vice Chancellor UET Peshawar, and Prof. Dr. Mumtaz Muhammad Shah, Chairman, Earth Sciences and Director of the China-Pakistan Joint Research Centre (CPJRC) at QAU, both institutions discussed forming a strategic partnership to advance national research capacity in this vital sector.
Dr. Sadiq Khattak highlighted that UET Peshawar is in the process of establishing the National Institute of Critical Minerals and Rare Earth Materials (NICMREM), which will focus on the entire value chain — from resource identification to processing and industrial application.
He emphasized that collaboration between NICMREM and CPJRC will help integrate expertise and resources, contributing to national capacity building and the sustainable exploration of mineral resources, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Prof. Dr. Mohammad Younas, Chairman, Department of Chemical Engineering, UET Peshawar, also attended the meeting.
