Hockey Revival Drive Gains Momentum as Senior Team Trials Begin in Peshawar

PESHAWAR: Senior hockey team trials are being held in Peshawar today, as Chief Selector Samiullah Khan announced a renewed push to rebuild a strong and competitive national squad.

Speaking to the media, Samiullah said that modern selection methods are being applied to ensure transparency and merit, while talented players from across the country are being shortlisted. He emphasized that the focus is on building a balanced team capable of competing at all formats.

Members of the national selection committee, along with several Olympians, were present at the trials, reflecting a collective effort to strengthen Pakistan hockey. Samiullah highlighted that promoting the sport at the grassroots level remains a key priority alongside national team development.

He acknowledged that Pakistan hockey is facing multiple challenges, particularly the lack of sponsorship and financial resources. According to him, improved funding and corporate support could significantly raise the standard of the game. He also pointed out that playersโ€™ financial hardships impact performance, stressing the need for job opportunities so athletes can fully concentrate on their sport.

Samiullah further revealed that a committee will be formed to evaluate and regulate hockey clubs, while efforts are ongoing to modernize the game in line with international standards.

Outlining future goals, he said the immediate target is to reach the final of the Asia Cup Hockey, along with delivering a stronger performance in the Hockey World Cup. He expressed optimism that winning a major tournament could pave the way for the return of international hockey to Pakistan.

Reaffirming commitment to revival, Samiullah said consistent and practical steps are being taken to restore Pakistanโ€™s position in global hockey rankings, adding that the country has the potential to reclaim its past glory.
