Peshawar : Students of the Criminology Department, University of Peshawar, visited Safe City Peshawar, where they were given a detailed briefing on modern policing, digital surveillance systems, and advanced technologies used for public safety.

Deputy Director Safe City Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Naveed Gul, briefed the delegation. DSP Operations Safe City Project Wajid Shah was also present on the occasion.

Naveed Gul said that, in line with the vision of Inspector General of Police Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Zulfiqar Hameed, Safe City projects are being expanded across various cities of the province. He termed the initiative a significant milestone toward promoting modern, smart, and technology-based policing.

He said that through modern policing aligned with contemporary needs, protection of life and property, crime prevention, counterterrorism efforts, and timely public assistance are being ensured.

He further explained that the Safe City Peshawar Command and Control Centre operates 24/7, monitoring the entire city. Using high-resolution cameras, facial recognition systems, automatic number plate recognition, thermal imaging, intelligent video analytics, and advanced monitoring software, suspicious activities, criminals, and wanted individuals are identified in real time.

He added that the project is playing an important role in preventing terrorism, street crime, and other serious offences. Sensitive locations, key installations, and public places are continuously monitored, significantly enhancing the capacity of law enforcement agencies.

Naveed Gul also informed the delegation that under the vision of the IGP Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Safe City projects in Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu, and Lakki Marwat are progressing rapidly and will soon be completed, further strengthening law and order in southern districts.

The students were given demonstrations of the command and control system, surveillance network, body-worn cameras, digital monitoring platforms, intelligent response mechanisms, and panic button systems. They were also informed that body-worn cameras are improving transparency, accountability, and professional standards in policing.

A detailed briefing was also given on the panic button system, through which emergency assistance is provided to women, elderly citizens, and the general public. Officials said that in a recent incident involving a house fire, timely activation of a panic button helped ensure swift response from rescue services, minimizing potential loss.

It was further stated that the panic button network is being expanded to more areas of the city to improve public safety and emergency response.

The delegation was also briefed on the integration of the Safe City system with the Excise and Taxation Department, enabling vehicle verification, identification of suspicious and unregistered vehicles, and improved inter-agency coordination.

Students were informed that the modern camera network assists in automatic traffic violation detection, traffic management, accident monitoring, and improved travel facilitation for citizens. The system has significantly improved transparency, efficiency, and public trust in policing.

A question-and-answer session was also held, during which students asked questions regarding modern policing, crime prevention, artificial intelligence-based surveillance, digital forensics, and future Safe City initiatives. They also shared suggestions regarding the panic button system.

The delegation was also briefed on surveillance systems installed in city patrol vehicles and body-worn cameras used by the Ababeel Squad by DSP Ababeel.

Later, the students visited the Police Martyrs’ Memorial, where they offered prayers for the elevation of the ranks of the martyrs. They appreciated the efforts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police in maintaining law and order, combating crime, countering terrorism, and eliminating narcotics.

At the end of the visit, the students described Safe City Peshawar as a practical example of modern, effective, and citizen-friendly policing, and praised the professional capabilities of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police and their use of advanced technology.
