KOHAT: Senior political leaders, religious scholars and tribal elders at a divisional jirga in Kohat called for inter-sect harmony and vowed to foil any attempts to create sectarian divisions during Muharram-ul-Haram.

Addressing the jirga at the Commissioner House, provincial Information Minister Shafi Jan, MNA and former interior minister Shehryar Khan Afridi, and provincial lawmakers Daud Shah Afridi and Aurangzeb Orakzai emphasized that Muslim unity was essential to defeat the designs of elements seeking to exploit religious differences.

The jirga was attended by deputy commissioners, district police officers, religious scholars, tribal elders and representatives of various schools of thought from Kohat, Orakzai, Hangu and Kurram.

Commissioner Syed Motasim Billah Shah, Regional Police Officer Irfan Tariq, Justice (R) Ibn Ali and Sunni and Shia religious leaders highlighted patience, tolerance, sacrifice and steadfastness as the core values of Muharram, urging collective efforts to maintain peace and religious harmony.

Shafi Jan said the provincial government had allocated Rs131 billion in the current fiscal year to strengthen law and order and public safety. He said around 43,000 police personnel would be deployed across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during Muharram, while enhanced security arrangements had been made for sensitive Imambargahs and processions through surveillance systems, additional personnel and close coordination among security agencies.

Shehryar Afridi said the people of Pakistan, particularly those of Kohat Division, had a longstanding tradition of peace, tolerance and brotherhood, urging citizens to demonstrate unity during Muharram and frustrate attempts to undermine stability.

At the conclusion of the jirga, participants assured the government and security agencies of their full support and expressed confidence that Muharram would pass peacefully through cooperation among religious leaders, tribal elders, public representatives and law enforcement agencies.
