Maulana Fazlur Rahman’s recent remarks about the Pakistan Army and its martyrs have triggered widespread anger across the country. Pakistanis consider the suggestion that soldiers sacrifice their lives for salaries unfair and disrespectful, arguing that no amount of money can compensate for the loss of a loved one. Soldiers defend the borders, fight terrorism, face harsh conditions, and risk their lives to protect the nation. Their service also extends to disaster relief, internal security, national development, and providing education and healthcare in remote areas. Their contributions have strengthened the bond between the army and the public, making criticism that appears to belittle their sacrifices particularly painful for serving soldiers, veterans, and martyrs’ families. Families who have lost sons, husbands, and fathers have expressed their grief through the media, stressing that their loved ones died for Pakistan, not for money, and have called for an apology. Religious scholars, political leaders, civil society organisations, and media commentators have also condemned the remarks, emphasising the honour owed to soldiers and their families. Public anger has spread through social media, gatherings, universities, markets, television discussions, and appeals to elected representatives. Many fear that such statements could damage military morale, deepen divisions, and weaken national unity at a time when Pakistan faces economic hardship, terrorism, security threats, and political instability. They believe the army and its martyrs deserve respect for their sacrifices and contributions to the country.
The controversy has also been linked to the political situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where analysts believe Fazlur Rahman was disappointed by the share of power or influence he expected under Governor rule. Critics allege that he has directed his political frustration towards the army. They maintain that Governor rule was imposed through constitutional procedures by the democratic government and relevant authorities, not by the military. The army does not distribute political positions or decide how power is shared among parties, and critics argue that political grievances should be addressed through democratic forums rather than directed at the armed forces. They also stress that soldiers are recruited and trained to defend the country, while their salaries are ordinary compensation for their service, not payment for sacrificing their lives. Although Fazlur Rahman has a long political career and the right to criticise state institutions, many believe such criticism should be factual, fair, and constructive. Some observers have linked his political positioning to the influence of Imran Khan, while reports suggest that even lot of his supporters are uncomfortable with his remarks. The strong response reflects widespread support for the army and its martyrs across different sections of society. Critics argue that the controversy distracts from the public’s real concerns, including economic relief, peace, security, development, and political stability. They urge the Maulana to reflect on the consequences of his words, recognise the pain of bereaved families, clarify his position, and apologise for any hurt caused.
The army’s relationship with the people is based on trust. This trust has been built over many years. It has been built through sacrifice and service. It has been built through the blood of martyrs. It has been built through the dedication of soldiers. This trust is a precious national asset. It should not be damaged by careless remarks. The Maulana’s statements have attempted to damage this trust. They have tried to create doubt in the minds of the people. They have tried to suggest that the army is motivated by money rather than duty. This suggestion is false. It is insulting to the soldiers. It is insulting to the martyrs. It is insulting to the people who trust the army. The people have rejected this suggestion. They have reaffirmed their trust in the army. They have reaffirmed their respect for the martyrs. This is a positive outcome. It shows that the people are wise. They cannot be misled by false statements. They know the truth. They know the reality of the army’s sacrifice. They know the value of the martyrs. This knowledge is their strength. It is the strength of the nation.
The political situation in the country is complex. There are many players and many interests. In such a situation, responsible behaviour is essential. Leaders should think before they speak. They should consider the impact of their words. They should avoid statements that can cause divisions. They should focus on issues that unite the people. The army and martyrs are uniting factors. They bring people together. They are a source of national pride. Any attempt to use them for political purposes is wrong. The Maulana should understand this. He should avoid such attempts in the future. He should focus on his political work. He should work for the people who support him. He should try to address their problems. He should try to find solutions to economic and social issues. This is what politics is about. This is what leaders are supposed to do. Making controversial remarks about the army is not leadership. It is not service to the people. It is a disservice. It harms the country. It harms the people. It harms the political process. The Maulana should learn from this experience. He should change his approach. He should become a positive voice in national politics.
The public anger is a warning sign. It is a warning to all politicians. It says that the people will not tolerate disrespect towards the army and martyrs. It says that the people are watching. It says that the people will respond. This warning should be taken seriously. It should guide the behaviour of politicians. It should make them careful in their statements. It should make them responsible. The people of Pakistan are generous and forgiving. But they have limits. They have red lines. The army and martyrs are among these red lines. No politician should cross them. No political party should try to exploit them. The consequences will be severe. The Maulana has experienced these consequences. His reputation has suffered. His political standing has been damaged. His supporters are confused. This is the cost of irresponsible remarks. Other politicians should take note. They should avoid making the same mistake. They should respect the sentiments of the people. They should respect the army and the martyrs. This is the path to political success. This is the path to national unity.
