PESHAWAR: Chairperson of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), Senator Rubina Khalid, visited the Benazir Nashonuma Facilitation Centre at Maulvi Ameer Shah Memorial Hospital in Peshawar to review healthcare and nutrition services for mothers and children. World Food Programme (WFP) Country Director Anita Hirsh also accompanied her during the visit.
Senator Rubina Khalid said the Benazir Nashonuma Programme is a vital initiative aimed at improving the health and nutrition of pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers and children up to two years of age. She added that BISP has become a trusted social protection institution serving more than 10 million deserving families across Pakistan.
The Chairperson urged media organizations to verify information with BISP before publishing negative reports, saying unverified news damages the institution’s credibility. She called on the media to help raise public awareness about the Benazir Nashonuma Programme through responsible reporting.
Highlighting ongoing reforms, Senator Rubina Khalid said BISP’s payment system is being fully digitized to improve transparency and ensure that financial assistance reaches deserving women safely and conveniently.
She said BISP digital SIMs are being issued and activated free of cost only through authorized offices. Under the Digital Social Protection Wallet, beneficiaries will receive instant payment notifications, while from the next payment cycle, the interoperability system will allow women to withdraw their funds from any authorized retailer or banking agent.
The Chairperson also warned that strict legal action is being taken against individuals involved in fraud in the name of BISP. She clarified that no individual or official has the authority to stop or approve financial assistance, as all payments are processed through a computerized system.
