UNITED NATIONS: Chile has expressed support for the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco over its entire territory, including the Sahara region, and endorsed Morocco’s 2007 autonomy proposal as a political solution to the dispute.
The position was conveyed in a joint communiqué issued following talks between Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and Chilean Foreign Minister Francisco Pérez Mackenna in New York on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. Chilean President José Antonio Kast also attended the meeting.
According to the communiqué, Chile will translate its support into bilateral action by promoting economic and trade cooperation in the Moroccan Sahara region, with the aim of strengthening investment, trade and productive development.
Chile also welcomed and endorsed UN Security Council Resolution 2797/2025, supporting calls for the parties to negotiate without preconditions and on the basis of Morocco’s autonomy proposal to reach a definitive political settlement acceptable to all parties.
During the meeting, the two foreign ministers also signed Terms of Reference to launch negotiations for a free trade agreement between Morocco and Chile.
