ACCRA: Ghana has reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan, describing it as the only realistic and lasting basis for reaching a mutually acceptable solution to the Sahara issue.
The position was outlined in a joint communiqué issued after talks between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, during Bourita’s working visit to Accra on Tuesday.
Ghana also welcomed the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797, which supports the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to facilitate negotiations based on Morocco’s autonomy proposal, with the aim of achieving a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution in line with the UN Charter.
The statement noted that Ghana’s position reflects growing international support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative and its sovereignty over the Sahara.
During the visit, Bourita and Ablakwa co-chaired the second session of the Morocco-Ghana Joint Cooperation Committee, where both sides discussed strengthening bilateral cooperation across various sectors.
