PESHAWAR: Veteran explorer, cyclist and sports administrator Syed Azhar Ali Shah has been honored with the Life Achievement Award by the Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in recognition of his lifelong contributions to exploration, cycling and sports development in Pakistan.

Syed Azhar Ali Shah is internationally known for his pioneering role in exploration and adventure. As a key member of the Indus Exploration Group, he participated in historic expeditions that successfully traversed and documented the entire 2,000-mile course of the Indus River from Khairabad to Port Qasim during landmark journeys conducted in 1987, 1992 and 1994.

In 1996, he took part in a pioneering expedition to the source of the Indus River in Western Tibet, contributing to one of the most significant geographical exploration projects in the region. The achievements earned international recognition, including a feature on the cover of the Explorers Journal, while photographs from the expeditions appeared on dozens of international magazine covers.

Apart from his achievements in exploration, Syed Azhar Ali Shah enjoyed a distinguished cycling career. He competed in the Tour of Pakistan in 1983 and 1984, completing the demanding route from Peshawar to Karachi, and emerged as champion of the Tour de Sarhad, covering the challenging stretch from Dera Ismail Khan to Abbottabad.

In sports administration, he has played a pivotal role in the promotion and development of cycling in Pakistan. He served as the first Secretary General of the Pakistan Cycling Federation from 2011 to 2019 and later became its President, making history as the first individual from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to lead the federation. He was re-elected for the 2023–2027 term and has also been serving as President of the South Asian Cycling Federation since 2019.

Under his leadership, Pakistan achieved unprecedented success at the Asian Road Cycling Championships in 2025 and 2026, winning its first-ever gold, silver and bronze medals in both men’s and women’s categories. These achievements significantly enhanced Pakistan’s profile in international cycling.

His stature in global cycling was further recognized when the Asian Cycling Confederation elected him as a voting delegate for the elections of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), reflecting the confidence placed in his leadership by the international cycling community.
