TIMES REPORT

KARACHI : Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has said that the provincial government is preparing master plans for 31 cities to ensure organized and sustainable urban development, including major cities such as Karachi and Hyderabad.

Addressing the Sindh Cities Forum 2026, held on the occasion of World Cities Day, the chief minister said that master plans for 17 cities had been completed, while work on the remaining 14 was in its final stages. Notifications for the master plans of nine cities — Sukkur, Larkana, Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, Mithi, Islamkot, Dadu, Nawabshah and Naushahro Feroze — had also been issued.

Murad Ali Shah said effective urban planning was essential to address unplanned construction, traffic congestion, water shortages, inadequate drainage systems and the impacts of climate change. He added that work on the master plans for Karachi and Hyderabad was also progressing rapidly.

The forum decided that future master plans would incorporate green belts, urban forests, preservation of historical heritage, rehabilitation of informal settlements, provision of basic facilities, modern transport systems, development of new cities and improvement of rural areas.

The chief minister urged international experts to provide practical recommendations for addressing the challenges faced by densely populated cities like Karachi and ensuring effective implementation of their master plans.
