This is the first time in Pakistan’s history that 29 eye transplants have been carried out in one day at Hayatabad Medical Complex.
The team that successfully performed the transplants included Dr. Murad, Dr. Siddiq Ullah, Dr. Samina Karim, Dr. Shahid Rauf, Dr. Noor, Dr. Zia, and Dr. Arqam.
All 29 patients, who had completely lost their eyesight, were provided eye transplant services free of cost.
Peshawar: At the Pakistan Institute of Community Ophthalmology (PICO) department of Hayatabad Medical Complex, a team led by Dr. Yasir Murad, along with senior surgeons Dr. Siddiq Ullah, Dr. Samina Karim, Dr. Shahid Rauf, Dr. Noor, Dr. Zia, and Dr. Arqam, made history by performing 29 free eye transplants in a single day during a mini eye bank camp. This is the first such event in Pakistan’s history.
According to the spokesperson of Hayatabad Medical Complex, Tauheed Zulfiqar, patients from remote areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa—including women, elderly individuals, and children—who had completely lost their vision underwent these procedures. The 29 corneas, donated from abroad, were successfully transplanted.
Along with the eye department, the operation theater support team and nursing staff played a vital role, working tirelessly to complete this historic milestone in Pakistan’s medical history.
It is worth mentioning that Hayatabad Medical Complex achieved this distinction by performing 29 transplants in one day. The donated corneas were sourced from foreign countries, and patients were selected strictly on merit—those who had completely lost vision in one or both eyes.
He further added that while doctors played a key role in achieving this milestone, donors, hospital staff, and the teams of Professor Sanaullah Jan and Dr. Yousaf Jamal also contributed significantly to this historic achievement.
