Baghi Welcomes New Provinces, Local Govt Empowerment

TIMES REPORT

PESHAWAR: Former Nazim, District Council Member Peshawar and senior political and social leader Safdar Khan Baghi has welcomed proposals for new provinces, administrative restructuring and devolution of powers to the grassroots level.

Baghi said the existing centralized system had failed to adequately address citizens’ basic problems. He stressed that new provinces must be accompanied by an empowered local government system, elected representatives, adequate financial resources and genuine devolution of authority.

He said meaningful democracy could be strengthened by transferring decision-making powers to locally elected representatives who are directly accountable to the people.

Baghi also called for appropriate educational and administrative competency standards for elected representatives and stressed the need to eliminate nepotism, corruption, misuse of authority and poor governance.

He said new provinces could improve access to government institutions, promote balanced regional development, ensure equitable distribution of development funds and create greater employment opportunities for youth.

Baghi said 2027 could provide an opportunity to lay the foundation for a new administrative structure, urging that all reforms be carried out through constitutional, democratic and transparent means.

He reaffirmed support for initiatives aimed at empowering local governments, devolving resources and strengthening democratic institutions.
