ISLAMABAD : Pakistan and the Maldives are exploring new opportunities to strengthen educational ties and expand cooperation in higher education. The discussions focused on scholarship opportunities for talented Maldivian students at the Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology (GIKI) and potential collaboration between universities in the two countries.
Engineer Saleem Saifullah Khan, President of the Society for the Promotion of Engineering Sciences and Technology in Pakistan (SOPREST) and Chairman of the Board of Governors of GIKI, met with His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, President of the Republic of Maldives, during his visit to Pakistan. The meeting focused on promoting educational cooperation and expanding institutional ties between the two countries.
The two leaders discussed scholarship opportunities at GIKI for talented Maldivian students, along with academic and research collaboration between universities in Pakistan and the Maldives. They also explored faculty exchange programmes to promote teaching, research cooperation and the sharing of knowledge and expertise.
The meeting also highlighted GIKI’s expanding international academic engagement and growing global reputation. The institute already welcomes international students, including those from Bangladesh. Meanwhile, GIKI students have recently completed international internships in the United States, Canada, South Korea, Germany and Saudi Arabia.
The engagement is expected to open new avenues for cooperation between Pakistan and the Maldives in higher education, research and youth development. Initiatives such as scholarships and faculty exchange programmes could not only strengthen academic links but also foster closer people-to-people relations and greater mutual understanding between the two countries.
GIKI has expressed its interest in taking these proposals forward through consultations with the relevant Maldivian authorities and educational institutions, with the aim of creating further opportunities for long-term academic partnership between Pakistan and the Maldives.
