MARDAN: Awami National Party (ANP) central leader and former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister Ameer Haider Khan Hoti has said that no system can resolve the country’s problems unless the establishment abandons its policy of interfering in politics and politicians stop seeking its directives.
He was speaking as chief guest at a condolence reference organised by Malgari Wakeelan (Lawyers’ Forum) at the district bar room in memory of its district president, the late Azizur Rehman, advocate.
Hoti said the lawyers’ movement had paved the way for the end of dictatorship, but its momentum could not be maintained afterwards. He said lawyers subsequently became victims of judicial activism, while politicians fell prey to the hybrid regime.
He said the country was once again at a critical juncture and a new debate had begun over the administrative structure. “Whatever the system, the country’s problems cannot be resolved until the establishment stops interfering in politics,” he said.
Paying tribute to the late Azizur Rehman, Hoti described him as a valuable asset of the ANP, a principled lawyer and a sincere worker of the Pakhtun movement. He said his death had created a void that would not be easily filled and was an irreparable loss for his family, the legal fraternity and the Pakhtun movement.
He urged young lawyers to carry forward Azizur Rahman Rehman’s commitment to principles, love for his people and struggle for the rights of disadvantaged sections of society.
Peshawar High Court Bar Association president Ameenur Rehman, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Bar Council member and provincial president of Malgari Wakeelan Rafiq Mohmand, Himayat Mayar, Shoaib Yousafzai, SM Tariq, Akbar Hoti, Faheem Akbar, Bacha Rehman, the deceased’s brother Nasrullah Khan and acting president of Malgari Wakeelan Akbar Khan also spoke on the occasion.
The speakers described the late lawyer as a genuine well-wisher of the Pakhtun people, a competent lawyer and a compassionate person who had consistently raised his voice for the rights of disadvantaged sections and remained at the forefront of practical efforts for their cause.
The reference concluded with a special prayer for the departed soul.
