The Arrow Rises Again: PPP’s Resounding Victory in Gilgit-Baltistan

By Junaid Qaiser
The people of Gilgit-Baltistan have sent a strong political message that resonates from the lush valleys of Hunza all the way to the majestic peaks surrounding Skardu. In the 2026 Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly elections, the PPP emerged as the dominant party, clinching 11 out of 24 general seats and positioning itself to form the next government. While election results are often boiled down to mere numbers, this victory represents a much deeper narrative—one of political trust, historical significance, and the public’s hopes for what lies ahead.
Gilgit-Baltistan has always held a special spot in Pakistan’s political scene. The people here have persistently sought more constitutional recognition, better representation, economic opportunities, and a louder voice in the decisions that shape their future. These aspirations have influenced every election in the region, and this year was no exception. What shifted was how the electorate reacted to the different visions laid out before them.
The PPP launched its campaign with a strong sense of confidence and a clear message. Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari spent weeks on the road, visiting various parts of the region, speaking at public gatherings, and meeting with local communities. From Gilgit to Skardu, Ghizer, Diamer, and Shigar, his speeches tackled issues that truly resonate with the locals: self-governance, constitutional rights, land ownership, job opportunities, and political empowerment.
Alongside him, Aseefa Bhutto Zardari infused the campaign with her own enthusiasm. Her efforts to engage with voters, particularly women and youth, brought a refreshing perspective to the party’s outreach. Together, this dynamic brother-sister pair succeeded in energizing party workers and reconnecting the PPP with a diverse segment of the electorate.
In Gilgit-Baltistan, the PPP benefited from something many political parties spend years trying to build: a historical connection with the people.
For many residents of the region, the party’s legacy remains closely linked to important milestones in Gilgit-Baltistan’s political development. The reforms introduced during the era of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto are still remembered for bringing administrative and social changes that helped integrate the region more closely with the rest of Pakistan. Decades later, the Gilgit-Baltistan Empowerment and Self-Governance Order of 2009, introduced during the PPP government, became another defining moment. It provided the region with a legislative assembly, a chief minister, and a stronger institutional framework for self-governance.
During the election campaign, the PPP effectively reminded voters of this history. More importantly, it linked that legacy to a promise of future progress. The message appeared to resonate with an electorate looking not only for political rhetoric but also for a credible roadmap forward.
The results also highlight the growing political awareness of Gilgit-Baltistan’s voters. Despite difficult terrain and logistical challenges, people participated enthusiastically in the democratic process. Particularly encouraging was the strong turnout among women, whose increasing participation continues to strengthen democratic culture in the region. Their presence at polling stations reflected a society that is becoming more politically engaged and more determined to shape its own future.

The PPP now carries the responsibility of transforming public trust into measurable progress. Voters who supported the party will expect delivery and fulfilment of promises. They will want to see improvements in their daily lives and meaningful movement on the issues that dominated the election campaign.
This victory has implications that stretch far beyond Gilgit-Baltistan. For Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, it marks a major political milestone and solidifies his status as one of the prominent figures in the country’s political landscape. In a time when Pakistan’s political scene is fiercely competitive, this outcome shows that the PPP still has strong organizational capabilities and electoral appeal in crucial areas.
One of the key takeaways from this election is that voters tend to favor parties that they feel genuinely understand their issues and stay in touch with their hopes. In Gilgit-Baltistan, many residents viewed the PPP as a party with a deep-rooted history in the region and a commitment to advocating for its future.
If the PPP can translate its electoral mandate into meaningful development, greater political empowerment, and improved opportunities for the people of Gilgit-Baltistan, this victory may be remembered as more than a successful campaign. It may be remembered as the beginning of a new chapter in the region’s political journey.
For now, one thing is certain: the arrow has risen again, and the people of Gilgit-Baltistan have ensured that its message cannot be ignored.
