Waziristan Peace Jirga Announces Grand Gathering on June 10

WANA: A Waziristan National Peace Jirga was held in Wana on Saturday against the growing incidents of insecurity, kidnapping for ransom, target killings, bomb blasts, and other violent incidents in South Waziristan Lower. The jirga was attended by a large number of political leaders, civil society representatives, youth, social activists, tribal elders, and people from various schools of thought.

Participants expressed serious concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in the region and presented various proposals for the establishment of lasting and sustainable peace. During the meeting, it was unanimously decided to convene a second grand Waziristan National Peace Jirga on June 10 to further strengthen public consultation and peace-building efforts.

Addressing the gathering, speakers said that over the past one and a half years, the security situation in Wana and South Waziristan Lower has become highly alarming. Incidents of kidnapping, target killings, bomb explosions, and other acts of terrorism have increased significantly, creating fear and anxiety among the local population. According to the speakers, the worsening security environment has not only affected daily life but has also severely damaged business activities.

The participants stated that the recurring incidents of terrorism have further compounded the difficulties faced by the public. Traders, students, laborers, and ordinary citizens are facing numerous challenges, while investment and economic activities have also declined considerably. They emphasized that without peace, the dream of development and prosperity cannot be realized.

During the jirga, participants proposed that to promote peace and build public consensus, representatives from different segments of society, particularly tribal elders, should conduct door-to-door meetings. The purpose of these meetings would be to encourage public consultation and formulate a joint strategy for peace by taking all stakeholders into confidence.

The participants also expressed concern that numerous incidents of insecurity have been reported over the past year, increasing the sense of insecurity among the people. They demanded that the government and law enforcement agencies fulfill their responsibilities effectively and ensure the protection of the lives and property of citizens.

At the conclusion of the jirga, the federal government, provincial government, security institutions, and law enforcement agencies were urged to take immediate and effective measures to restore peace in South Waziristan Lower. The participants stated that the people of the region can no longer bear further violence and instability, and that peace has become an urgent necessity.

The jirga was addressed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Member of the National Assembly Zubair Wazir, Member of the Provincial Assembly Ajab Gul Wazir, former independent candidate Taj Wazir, local PTM leader Shahzada Wazir, Malik Azizullah, Mufti Jina Mir, Pakistan Peoples Party District President Amanullah, Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Saif-ur-Rehman, Jamaat-e-Islami leader Mumtaz, Malik Gul Muhammad Wazir, and several other speakers.

The speakers reaffirmed their commitment to continuing jirgas and consultative meetings until sustainable peace is established in the region. They stated that after consultations with tribal elders, political leaders, social organizations, public representatives, and other stakeholders, a final decision and unanimous course of action would be formulated to restore South Waziristan as a peaceful region.

At the end of the jirga, participants unanimously announced the convening of the second Waziristan National Peace Jirga on June 10, where the law and order situation, public recommendations, and future strategy will be discussed in detail.
